What's the difference between for-profit and non-profit schools?

All the schools contained within this directory are designated public NON-PROFIT institutions.

A non-profit school:

  1. Provides education to its students for the greater good of the community, state, nation, or world;
  2. Cannot use its funds for any purpose other than the above;
  3. Must use its profits (as from tuition and fees) for the operation and funding of the institution;
  4. Does not pay taxes.

A for-profit school:

  1. Exists to make money for owners and/or shareholders;
  2. Pays taxes.

We have not included for-profit schools in our directory for the following reasons:

  1. They are usually more expensive than public schools;
  2. They are sometimes less rigorous in their academic content and, therefore, are not always recognized as legitimate sources of higher education by many employers and academic institutions;
  3. They may not be accredited.
